My moms uncle was recently put in a nursing home because of his Alzheimers, his room at his home he'd lived in since childhood was unnavgable because of all of the towers of books he had laying around. His collection was probably the closest I've ever seen to a personal library. (if i haven't embellished the fact enough i will be straight forward with you and say that he has easily over 1,000 books) His sister wants to move out of the house now and is getting rid of all of these books. My mom has had boxes of them in her car for the past few weeks, and has told me i can keep ten. Which really isn't as easy as it sounds, especially not knowing how often i'll be able to make selections. Also my uncle was a like uber polyglot before he got sick, so amongst the books in my moms car are dozens of foreign language guides. I really wish I could keep them all. He has instructional guides, grammar books, and dictionaries for Swedish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Gaelic, Persian, Swahili, Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Finnish, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Czech, Russian, Japanese, Thai, Romanian, Polish, Greek, and this Mali language called Mam. And those are just the ones I can list off the top of my head. This is a bigger dilemma than any Nelly ever sung of. Considering a) how indecisive i am, b) how much of a pack rat I am, c) how sentimental I am, I really am considering stashing a box of books somewhere until I move out.
(other notable finds that I am definitely keeping are a history of swearing, a book on the history of wine, this huge dictionary for polyglots, and this Virgil book).
All the books I don't pick out are going to the library, but even though that seems like a charitable donation i am kind of paranoid they're just going to be sold and thrown out.
If anyone would like any books on any particular language, or if theres any particular type of book you'd like me to keep an eye out for let me know, these books go way back to the 1920s too.

1One television text that I would consider apt for analysis would be Showtime’s hit series Weed. This show centers around the life of Nancy Botwin a young widowed suburbanite who struggles maintain her privileged lifestyle she has grown accustomed to following her husbands death. In order to keep her live in maid, her swimming pool, and her spacious home Nancy resorts to dealing marijuana in her gated community. What begins as her involvement small dealing operation turns into her butting heads with small cartels, and Nancy becoming a fairly well known grower and seller. Nancy is forced to manage all of this added stress on top of dealing with her responsibilities as a mother, a position which is one of considerable stress alone. As one could imagine Nancy’s involvement in this lifestyle eventually has repercussions that are felt by her and her family members. I would really enjoy writing a rhetorical analysis of the show Weed’s, and in doing so would explore the character of Nancy and whether the message sent out through her characters storylines are feminist or post-feminist.
Likely I would begin the paper discussing how Weed’s relates to other TV show’s that focus on working women such as Murphy Brown, and Mary Tyler Moore. I would analyze how the shows relate to each other, and discuss how a show like Weeds would not be possible without trail blazing shows like Mary Tyler Moore before it. Obviously Weeds is different than the two shows because of the illegal nature of Nancy’s work, the concept of an industrious woman entering a male dominated field remains prevalent. A great portion of the analysis would be a character analysis of Nancy Botwin herself, in which I would explore her personality, by analyzing her character attributes, her psychological states, and the overall theme of her characters storyline up until now.
When discussing her positive characteristics specifically I would address Nancy’s intuition and cunning, as is evidenced by her rapid professional success on the show. In doing so I would cite her success at networking, and her ability to manipulate those around her. Examples I would use to support my would be the in the first season episode “The Godmother”, also I would discuss the episode “MILF Money” in which Nancy’s business reaches new heights and she starts to lucratively reap from what she’s sewn. Nancy not only has a good deal of foresight when it comes to her business, but she also is quick thinking and resilient. Problems she has to deal with in the series include blackmailing campus security officers, accidentally entering a relationship with a DEA agent, threats from rival dealers, and competition from legal grow stores, and that is in the first season alone. Despite her lack of experience Nancy’s quick thinking and diligence allow her to succeed in a world that is widely unknown to her.
However Nancy has negative characteristics to discuss as well that directly correlate to her psychological state.. Similar to Murphy Brown, Nancy has difficulty balancing working and being a mother. However her situation differs (legality and risk factor aside) in that while Murphy’s professional life suffers as she becomes a mother, Nancy’s family life suffers as she becomes industrious. Nancy recognizes the fact that her work is putting her and her family in a great deal of jeopardy. Motivation for her work includes desperation following financial devastation. Prior to the series Nancy had been happily married for 17 years, and was a dedicated member of the PTA up until her husbands death left her near penniless after being ripped off by her insurance. Nancy is very attached to her lifestyle and not having an education uses dealing as a way to ensure that her home life will not change. Ther is materialism evident on her part as she also rewards herself with fancy hybrid cars, and expensive jewelry when she prospers. However as she becomes preoccupied with keeping them financially stable she begins to be neglectful of them. In the third season episode “Risk” Nancy’s youngest son Shane starts going off the deep end and claims to be communicating with his dead father, as Silas returns home having been badly beaten by bikers who Nancy had ended business with. Nancy reaches low points in which she feels a level of self-disgust for what she perceives as a failure at motherhood, but she continues on the track she’s on anyway trapped to a degree by her bourgeois upbringing.
Weeds explores a modern woman’s journey as she delves into a lifestyle one would not associate with a upper middle class woman. While Nancy is a sympathetic character, she is not perfect and commits some actions that are reprehensible. While the quality of her parenting can be called to doubt, her love for her kids is boundless. Ultimately I would conclude that while Nancy’s lifestyle is far from normal, and may be damaging that she is not a post-feminist character. Nancy does not have the same level of opportunities as Murphy Brown, and Mary Tyler Moore, and while all shows feature women conflicting with working, I believe that Nancys character has more at stake as she deals in both senses of the term.

Nye, also known as Bill Nye, The Science Guy, sought the order in a Los Angeles court on September 4, after spotting his ex, Blair Tindal, dressed in black and acting suspiciously near his home. The order would prevent Tindal from coming near his California house and contacting him. The legal papers filed state Tindal "emerged from my backyard... carrying two plastic bottles filled with some sort of solvent. Apparently she was trying to poison my plants including some vegetable(s). She fled on foot and then a car sped away from the scene." Tindal had driven by his house twice in the previous three weeks. Nye also complained in an abuse report that Tindal "left a coffee pot on my porch" on August 16. However, Tindal filed a response on November 13, disagreeing with the terms of the restraining order. A hearing has been set for December 20.

Zhang Yimou’s film “Hero” interprets the myth of the assassin Jim Ke through the Wuxiá genre. Wuxia is a classically honored genre in China, that involves martial artistry, romance, and an element of fantasy. “Hero” utilized the legend of Jim Ke to convey messages of moral subjectivity, utilitarianism, romance, and unification. The theme that I felt received particular emphasis was utilitarianism, however I believed that there were negative aspects to this theme. My suspicions were confirmed when I read about the mistranslation from Chinese to English, the phrase that was translated as “Our Land” really translates to “all under heaven”. While it is interesting to gain an insight to an Eastern take on manifest destiny I personally do not agree with this philosophy. Overall I did not enjoy the movie, although it was not by any means awful. The cinematography, set design, costuming, and special effects definitely succeeded in creating a chic film. However, in my opinion, the writing was not exceptionally substantive. I found many scenes melodramatic, and some carried on for far too long. I was unable to relate to these characters who were too archetypal to invoke sympathy. My impression of the film is likely largely shaped by my dislike of the action genre. I have a difficult time suspending disbelief while watching a film unless I am watching a comedy, or something which is completely supernatural or surreal. This film came out in China in 2002 and was likely popular due to the fact that it tells an inspiring origin to the country’s unification and furthers nationalist cause. Also, this film probably drew attention due to the controversy aroused by the theme of reunification. Whereas in the United States I think this film was popular because it’s American release was sponsored by Quentin Tarantino, and featured action sequences like those popularized by the Wachowski brothers. The film was a financial success in China because it’s Chinese audience was motivated by self-interest. Whereas the film’s United States audience was more likely interested in the film because they could associate it with a big name (Tarantino), and could draw similarities to a popular American film series (“the Matrix Trilogy”).

Overall this has been a very important summer, it happened out of no where, and it's ending's going to be bittersweet.
Somethings were great like renewing old friendships, and never having a dull moment. But somethings were severly lacking greatness like having to put a cat and a dog to sleep within the same week. Everythings changing for better or worse, but when everything is changing there is never more opportunity.
I'm very excited to returnt to New Paltz, even commuting should be amazing. For some reason I'm thinking back to the fall of freshmen year of college, and Thanksgiving break. It was only six days long but I remember how longed it seemed to be away from everyone, and how unhappy we all were about it. Now six days has been nothing, but I am looking forward to seeing everyone so much that six days will seem like eternity.
SO MUCH POTENTIAL!
